Position description

At the Center for Spatial Studies and Data Science at University of California Santa Barbara (@Spatial), we collaboratively design, implement and disseminate spatial science for a better world! We are leading interdisciplinary research to develop the next wave of spatial data science methods and convene agenda setting conversations through Specialist Meetings and partnerships. We are leveraging spatial science solutions to solve the world’s challenging problems, through applied and community embedded research. We are leaders in GIScience education and are advancing curriculum at all levels and disseminating the geographic approach.

One of the exciting projects @Spatial is the Guide to the Geographic Approach, a UCSB-led collaboration with Esri and the GIS community that identifies the learning outcomes and skills needed for the modern GIScience student and GIS user.  The collaborative group also develops curriculum materials and resources that are designed to give instructors maximum flexibility.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced GIS (Geographic Information Systems) professional to join our academic team as a GIS Curriculum Coordinator, supporting the Guide to the Geographic Approach. This role will focus on designing, developing, and coordinating a modern and comprehensive GIS curriculum in collaboration with faculty members across universities and with diverse GIS professionals. The successful candidate will provide leadership to ensure curriculum is innovative, up-to-date, and aligned with industry standards to meet the educational needs of students. In addition to curriculum development, the individual may also supervise graduate student teaching assistants (TAs), and lead seminars, workshops and/or internship programs.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A Master's degree or higher in Geography, GIS, or a related discipline.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• Significant experience in GIS education, curriculum development, and the use of modern GIS tools and software, including ESRI.

Preferred qualifications
  • A Ph.D. is preferred.
  • 3 years preferred experience in GIS education, curriculum development, and the use of modern GIS tools and software, including ESRI.
  • Strong experience in managing and mentoring graduate student teaching assistants.
  • Experience with online teaching platforms and tools.
  • Familiarity with GIS certification programs or professional GIS standards.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary academic settings or in collaboration with industry professionals.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and collaboration skills.
  • A passion for pedagogical innovation and staying current with the evolving GIS landscape.
