Scientific Information Manager
(Assistant or Associate Specialist) 1 position -single hire recruitment

The UCSB Marine Science Institute (MSI) seeks a Scientific Information Manager to support and promote the scientific mission of the Santa Barbara Coastal Long-term Ecological Research (SBC LTER) project, part of an NSF-sponsored program engaged in interdisciplinary research on population, community and ecosystem level processes in the context of environmental change.

The Santa Barbara Coastal LTER was initiated in 2000, and focuses on the kelp forest ecosystems in the Santa Barbara Channel. Interdisciplinary studies are coordinated among many labs to investigate the influence of terrestrial and marine processes on kelp forest ecosystems, using coordinated long term measurements, manipulative field experiments and modeling, across land, beach, ocean and reef ecosystems.

The project’s Information Manager facilitates research and education through the management and publication of its data, specifically to handle data and information for the project’s participants and to design and deliver data products to Network repositories for reuse and synthesis. NSF places high priority on data documentation, preservation and accessibility, and information management is an important criterion by which the project is evaluated. This position represents bridge between science and information technology, and involves regular interactions with SBC LTER investigators, students and staff, and close collaboration with a partner LTER site (also at UCSB) on many data-related issues.

Basic Qualifications: Master’s degree in Environmental, Biological or Physical Science or equivalent experience. Expertise with procedural programming for science (e.g., Matlab, R, SAS).

Additional Qualifications: The following qualifications are required if the applicant is to be offered the position at the Associate Specialist level: experience managing ecological or geophysical datasets. Experience with various data management tools (PostgreSQL, XML). Experience with one or more Unix variants with shell programming (e.g., Linux), as well as Windows and MacOS X-based systems. Excellent communication and written skills, and the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team of students, staff and researchers.

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with Ecological Metadata Language (EML). Familiarity with file system tools such as SMB, LDAP and SSH. Demonstrated experience in building web sites (static and dynamic) using common languages and standards (e.g., HTML, XML, XSLT, Perl, PHP, SQL, Web Services, Apache), including configuration, debugging and management.

This is 100% time appointment for one year, renewed as funding permits. Salary is dependent on experience. Anticipated start date for this position is October 1, 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. The University of California Santa Barbara offers a competitive benefits package (health, dental, vision, retirement, disability). Outdoor recreation opportunities abound in the mild Central California climate, as do local arts and cultural experiences. This city of approximately 90,000 residents offers many metropolitan amenities in a close-knit beach community.
