Junior Specialist in Marine Microbial Ecology

The Marine Science Institute (MSI) at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a Junior Specialist to perform research in the specialized field of microbial cultivation. Responsibilities include the maintenance of marine microbial cultures, including, but not limited to: culture media preparation, culture vessel preparation, reagent preparation, and nutrient analyses. The Jr. Specialist will be responsible for maintaining records and frozen archives of a marine microbial culture collection. The Jr. Specialist will also perform some general laboratory duties including supply ordering and shipping. Position will require work with hazardous chemicals and radioisotopes. Some sea-going field work may be required, which will require the employee to work on research vessels ranging in size from 12' to global class vessels. The position may involve international travel; a valid US passport or a willingness to obtain one is required.

Basic qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, ecology, marine science, or a related field.

Additional qualifications: Relevant skills include flow cytometry, light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, microelectrode measurements, sterile technique, and nucleic acid extraction. The ideal applicant will have exceptional attention to detail, patience, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn new things.

Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree in microbiology, ecology, or related field. Prior experience with the cultivation of marine microbes (bacteria or archaea) or marine phytoplankton is desired, but not absolutely required.

Salary and benefits will depend on academic background and experience. 100% time appointment for one year from start date with possibility of annual renewal.
