Position description

The University of California, Santa Barbara seeks to hire a highly creative and productive individual to fill a Mellichamp Chair in Sustainable Chemical Manufacturing, starting July 1, 2015 or later. Via a Mellichamp Academic Initiative, the University has approved a cluster of four endowed Chair positions with a common theme of “Sustainable Materials and Product Design”. The interests of the Chairholders will encompass green chemistry, sustainable strategies in chemical processing, sustainable catalysis, and economic analysis of sustainable chemical technologies. The cluster is the result of a philanthropic gift generously donated by Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp. All four Chairholders are expected to work together closely to foster broad, interdisciplinary research and education in chemical sustainability.

Sustainable strategies in chemical processing may include reducing or eliminating the use of rare elements and other scarce materials, minimizing the use of fresh water and energy, increasing the ease of recovery/recycling including from contaminated sources, and limiting the environmental toxicity of intended products, by-products and degradation products, using chemical and/or biological approaches. This academic appointment will be primarily in Chemical Engineering, although joint appointments will also be considered. We seek outstanding individuals with clear evidence of important intellectual contributions in the general area of design of sustainable chemical technologies.

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service. This is an external search for a tenured position and is open to candidates of any rank.
